“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.”

Chinese Proverb

At Bottesford C.E. Primary School, foreign language lessons are taught in Key Stage 2. We also promote an interest in foreign languages in Key Stage 1, whenever the opportunity arises, through children’s own knowledge and experience and through links to other areas of the curriculum.

Intent:

Our foreign language curriculum is designed to enable our children to:

  • Develop linguistic and communicative competence

  • Extend their knowledge of how language works

  • Explore similarities and differences between the language we are studying, any different languages spoken at home, and English

Implementation:

At Key Stage 2 the children are taught French in order to generate a fascination for words and how language works, a wider curiosity about other countries and cultures and to provide the foundations needed to become confident communicators.

Teaching includes an introduction to these essential areas of knowledge, through engaging lessons and opportunities to apply skills.

Pronunciation – hearing correct pronunciation and linking this to how words are written so that children realise that this is often different to English

Vocabulary – understanding and using everyday words and phrases to communicate with confidence

Grammar – starting to recognise the essential building blocks required to create simple sentences independently
